South End Grounds is destroyed by fire.
May 15, 1894
Later known as the Great Roxbury Fire of 1894, it breaks out during a game in which a fight occurs between players on the Beaneaters and the New York Giants.. The fire spreads over 12 acres and destroys more than 200 other buildings on Burke, Coventry, Cunard, and Walpole streets. Its is subsequently attributed either to the careless disposal of a cigarette or boys playing with matches under the bleachers along Columbus Avenue. The Boston team is forced to move temporarily to the Congress Street Grounds until a new stadium is built in 1894.*
